I 💕 memoirs！ Thank you Danielle for sharing such intimate experiences。 I can only imagine how you must have felt growing up without the woman you longed for so much， your Mother。 Your Grandmother did the best she could with what she had。 In the end， I had so many questions， but what comes to mind is Did you get the opportunity to rekindle the relationship with you Mom？

Wonderful bookI came on this by accident。 From nearly the beginning it was a riveting story about poverty， abuse， and the redeeming love of the author’s grandmother。 As others have said， given its grim themes it’s an amazingly funny memoir。

I think maybe I missing something… Her story seemed to sort of meander without purpose。 Trauma is handled in a way that feels strange。 The book was fine， but it wasn’t special。 To me。

I thought this booked glossed over too many of the important parts of her story in favor of the more “fun” stuff—growing up in the 80s， her grandmas quirks etc。 it just felt like she couldn’t really commit to sharing her story and her family so it was quick little bites that didn’t go deeper than her overly emotional wrap up sentence at the end of each chapter。 Found it unsatisfying。

The author managed to tell her story of abuse and abandonment with humor and without self pity。 As a woman who frequently berates herself for past parenting mistakes， memoirs like Danielle’s give me assurance that I wasn’t so bad after all。 Danielle’s endurance and persistence in overcoming the obstacles she faced is proof that circumstances can be used as an excuse or a motivator。
